Cleaning Razors

By reading the following article you are agreeing to the disclaimer at the foot of the page!

I often get asked how I get the shine on the razors I sell on ebay,
so here is a quick description with links the where I get the products used from.

I clean the razors using a Dremel type rotary tool with flexible shaft.

I use a cheaper mains rotary tool copy, the transformed or battery ones are only good for delicate work. It can be used without the flexi shaft but it is slightly more difficult. The work is carried out on a square of cardboard on my work bench.

I always Wear Eye & hand protection

Tip Watch the rotation! For clockwise tools I have the blade edge on the left.

Wire brushing

I use the rotary wire brush on the lowest speed to remove the light rust,
pressing too hard will result a burn & leave a satin finish.
Note Even the best quality brushes will shed bristles.

The blade front is cleaned first including the tang & tail. I turn it over & do the other side. Lastly I do the spine & tail top & bottom & bottom jimps.
The blade edge is protected with electrical tape for this bit.

I have to be careful near the scales with the wire brush as just a light touch
will mark them.

Tip for the UK
don’t buy more than £18.00 worth or you may incur an import charge.

1st Polish Chromium oxide

The first polish used is Green Chromium oxide powder mixed with a little mineral oil into a stiff paste.
I rub some with my finger sparingly on the blade front, tang & tail.
This is cleaned with the felt mop on speed 3. Pitting can be done again with a dab more.
I keep the mop moving steadily on the thicker part & little quicker on the edge so as not to put too much heat in.
Note I Let the blade cool down!

The back is cleaned following the same procedure, edge to the left.
I am always careful around the scales as at this speed it will burn or melt the scales.

Note I Let the blade cool down!

The spine is cleaned next. The blade edge is protected with electrical tape for this bit again.
Box scratches are removed with wet & dry paper 800 minimum working
up to 1500 or 2000.
I use a little more pressure & clean length ways first then back & forwards over the spine. The tip is delicate & done by hand later.
Note I Let the blade cool down!

I clean the razor well with a soft cloth to remove all traces of the chrome paste then I repeat the Chrome oxide sequence using  Solvol Autosol metal polish or Mass, (Using a different mop).
Note I Let the blade cool down between each process!

I clean around the pivot pin between the scales by hand with an old rotary wire brush. Then I finish the razors by hand polishing including the scales with metal polish, also gently pull the rag through the scales to remove any debris.
