This Japanese straight razor seems to be about 40 or 50
years old. The handle is made from what looks something
like bakelite or celluloid, although we're not really
sure what it is. The kanji marking on one side of the
tang says "Houken" (literally, "Treasure Sword"), while
on the other side it says "H.Y.S.2.7.10". (We don't
really know, but we imaging that the "H.Y.S." could
stand for "Houken Yasuki Steel", and that the number
could be a date. If it is a date, then it would be July
10, Showa 2 (1927), although this razor doesn't seem
that old. We could be wrong, and it might be that old,
but then again the numbers could just as easily not be a
date at all.) There is another very small kanji marking
at the protruding end of the tang, but it is illegible.
The inlaid-metal marking on the handle says "Houken 66". |
