Mappin & Webb

The roots of the firm can be traced to around 1810, when Joseph Mappin established a family business, which became known as Mappin Brothers, making and selling cutlery on Norfolk Street. Internal disputes led to Newton Mappin leaving Mappin Brothers to set up his own electroplating business around the 1850s, which soon became Mappin & Webb.

By the end of the 1880s, Mappin Brothers was purchased by the Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Co of London. In contrast, Mappin & Webb continued to enjoy commercial success, to the extent that Newton Mappin was able to purchase back Mappin Brothers from its London owner during the early 1900s.

However, like many Sheffield firms, business appears to have dwindled during the middle of the 1900s. Walker & Hall, Mappin & Webb and Elkington & Co were brought together in 1963 to form British Silverware Limited of Sheffield. Mappin & Webb currently exists as a luxury retailer and is owned by Asprey & Co.

About Mappin & Webb…
The roots of the firm can be traced to around 1810, when Joseph Mappin established a business making and selling cutlery on Norfolk Street. Other family members joined the expanding firm, which traded as Mappin Brothers. A shop and warehouse space was established in London during the 1840s, enabling the business to grow further by trading directly with affluent customers. Internal disputes led to Newton Mappin leaving Mappin Brothers to set up his own electroplating business around the 1850s, which soon became Mappin & Webb.

By the end of the 1880s, Mappin Brothers was purchased by the Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Co of London. Mappin & Webb, however, continued to enjoy commercial success. The firm manufactured a vast range of holloware and table cutlery. Such was its success, that Newton Mappin was able to purchase back Mappin Brothers during the early 1900s.

However, like many Sheffield firms, the firm's fortunes declined during the middle of the 1900s. Walker & Hall, Mappin & Webb and Elkington & Co were brought together in 1963 to form British Silverware Limited of Sheffield. Mappin & Webb currently exists as a luxury retailer and is owned by Asprey & Co.
